REVIEWS & QUOTES

I think the SPECIAL INTEREST group is a great idea and you’ll fill a niche within the union movement that is lacking, for conscientious, social justice oriented music, by professional musicians that are unionized and diverse.

”   Just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed you and the Special Interest Group at the Tranzac on Thursday evening. Your mash-up aesthetic and socially conscious song choices spoke to me in a BIG way. Absolutely loved it!

I’ll be back!

There is a new kickass socially and politically progressive band in town called The Special Interest Group. Fronted by the great vocals of Rebecca Campbell, and ace guitar player Kevin Barrett, they sing activist songs  with a groove, traditional, old and new, by writers such as Bob Dylan, Odetta, Green Day, Graham Nash, Billy Bragg, Elvis Costello and The Clash.

With Rebecca and Kevin’s vocals and guitars turned into thrilling three part harmonies by sax and flute player Jim Bish, and the groove backed by Ian de Souza on bass and the drumming of Rakesh Tewari and sometimes special guests, they stir the blood and the heart with songs that address contemporary issues from peace, climate change, to social and economic justice and workers’ and women’s rights.

Their performances are inspiring and a whole lot of  fun. they are at Graffiti’s in Kensington Market on Feburary 24, and they are doing an International Women’s Day gig on March 7. Check their website at thespecialinterestgroup.ca
